Shooting know-how
This includes much more than point and shoot. The technical foundation for all image making is light and lighting. Plan to learn to use “existing” light … the natural light around you and “available” light … the lighting instruments you bring to use in the studio and on location.
Beyond lighting and related technology like exposure, is growing art director-like know-how at composition and designing the scene. This vast arena includes composing the scene within the camera and expands to include a long list of scene elements such as selecting the model, props, effects lighting, etc.
Digital Illustration know-how
Everyone knows that Photoshop is the favorite digital tool for digital image making. How many, however, know that a digital illustration of combined art and camera images starts with a plan. This plan may include a sketch, low resolution layout or on screen search of image components.
The next step is to advance Photoshop know-how into compositing incredible, digital illustrations. These are illustrations that may use advanced applications of masking and layering and, or color correction, filtering and exposure layering.
Business and operations know-how
Professional image making is about creating more opportunity for more, higher end projects. This is why today’s professional photographer will want to know about time management, creating and maintaining a self promotional website, hiring staff, studio operations and the list goes on.
